What does fully comprehensive car insurance cover?

It's a legal requirement for all UK drivers to have valid car insurance, and comprehensive cover is - generally speaking - the highest level of cover you can get.

If you're involved in a collision which is deemed to be your fault, you'll be protected financially for:

  • Injury to other people (third parties)
  • Damage to their vehicle or property
  • Injury to yourself, and any of your passengers
  • Damage to your car which needs repair
  • Replacement of your car if it's written-off

You'll also be covered if your car is damaged by fire, stolen or damaged by attempted theft.

Some policies will also cover your possessions inside the car, but check your policy to be sure.

How much does comprehensive cover cost?

The latest data shows the average cost of comprehensive car insurance is £546*.

The price of comprehensive insurance is based on many factors including the type of car you drive, your driving experience, no claims bonus, the job you do, how much you drive and when, and your history of claims and convictions. There is also a great deal of difference depending where you live.

Is comprehensive cover more expensive than third party cover?

It's a common expectation that third party insurance - such as third party only (TPO) or third party, fire and theft (TPFT) - will be cheaper than comprehensive insurance because it provides a lower level of cover. However, this isn't always the case.

Comprehensive insurance can sometimes be cheaper than third party because insurers often view comprehensive policyholders as lower-risk drivers and price policies accordingly. This is why it's always best to compare prices for different levels of cover before you commit.

How to get cheaper comprehensive car insurance?

If you answer yes to all these questions, you could get cheaper car insurance:

Do you have a substantial no-claims bonus?

If you've driven claim-free for a number of years, this can help bring down the cost of comprehensive car insurance.

Uswitch UK car insurance statistics show that drivers who have held their no-claims bonus for five years pay 36.46% less than those who have only had the discount for one year.

Do you keep your car off the road?

If you keep your car on your driveway or - better still - in a garage, you reduce the risk of theft or damage. This can help to reduce the cost of cover.

Do you drive a standard, sensible car?

Cars are grouped for insurance, with smaller, easy-to-fix cars with less powerful engines falling into lower groups. These are cheaper to insure accordingly. Driving a more powerful car will crank up the cost of insurance, as will getting modifications.

Does your car have an immobiliser?

Thatcham-approved security devices, such as alarms and immobilisers, can help bring down car insurance premiums.

Can I drive any car if I have fully comprehensive car insurance?

It depends on your policy. It's a common misconception that all comprehensive policies come with driving other cars (DOC) cover. While this used to be a standard feature, it's now increasingly rare.

For this reason, you mustn't assume your comprehensive policy has this feature. Always check the small print before getting behind the wheel of someone else's car. Even if the policy does have DOC, there may be restrictions. For example, you may only be able to drive it in an emergency. And it's likely you'll only have third party cover.

Can I add named drivers to my comprehensive policy?

Yes, it's usually possible to add named drivers to your comprehensive policy. Not only does this mean more flexible use of the car, but also you might find it makes your car insurance cheaper. Adding experienced drivers with no recent claims or convictions could lower the cost of your cover.

You can add named drivers when applying for your policy, or during the policy term by contacting your insurer.

It's important that the main driver on the policy is the person who drives the car most though. If it's discovered that a named driver actually drives the car most of the time, this is a type of fraud known as 'fronting'.

Are all fully comprehensive car insurance policies the same?

Not really. While all comprehensive policies should provide a certain level of cover, some may have features as standard which others don't.

Check for cover for things like:

  • Car stereo, speakers or a sat-nav
  • Personal belongings in the car
  • Vehicle recovery or accident transport
  • Windscreen damage and loss or theft of keys

Other policies may have certain exclusions you should look out for.

This is why it's important to check the policy thoroughly before you commit. Make sure it covers everything you need for your exact circumstances.

Why should I choose comprehensive car insurance?

Possibly the most important benefit of comprehensive car insurance is that it covers damage to your vehicle and personal injury to yourself. While third party policies protect you financially if you injure someone else, or damage their vehicle or property, you cannot claim for repairs or replacement of your car. Likewise you could be left high and dry if you're injured.

This is why it's always important to consider opting for comprehensive cover. Plus it can often work out cheaper than lower levels of cover. For this reason, it's a good idea to compare prices of different levels of policy before you buy.

Comprehensive car insurance FAQs

Will I get a courtesy car with fully comprehensive car insurance?

A courtesy car means you have something to drive while your car is being repaired, but you might only get it if you use an approved repairer. Comprehensive policies vary on when they will supply courtesy cars, the type of car and for how long.

Check how long you can keep the car – some insurers limit this cover to up to 21 days. If you have a large car with many seats, you may choose a policy that will provide a similar-sized car if yours is being repaired.

Do I have to use a specific repairer with fully comprehensive car insurance?

You might find that your cover is affected if you don’t use an approved repairer. For example, some insurers limit the windscreen cover if you don’t use the approved repairer.
